Soft Skills That are Needed to Be a Reliable Security Officer

You need a few other “soft” skills to be a reliable security officer.

Security officers have two primary responsibilities: patrol and perceive. They have to watch an area around them for possible thieves or danger and patrol the areas to keep their buildings safe. Being a security patrol officers can be a very rewarding experience. You could be the first line of defense in protecting your property or people there. Before your very first assignment, you will be trained on how you should do your job more effectively. But, you need a few other “soft” skills to be a reliable security officer. Read on for a couple of skills you need before you become a reliable security officer!

Clear Communication

As a security patrol officer, you will have to have solid communication skills with everyone you interact with. This includes coworkers, possible threats, and the general public.

A lot of security officers work on a team, and communication between teammates is an important skill. You have to be able to effectively communicate any needs for backup and write clear reports that other employees on the security staff can read and evaluate. If you see anyone acting suspiciously, you have to be able to communicate with them. This might mean taking action or just informing the individuals that they have to leave the premises. You might be called as a possible witness in a court case. You’ll have to clearly communicate the events that you witnessed, as well as actions that you took, to the jury and judge. In more mundane situations, you’ll have to give directions and be helpful to everyone around you.

Open Honesty as a Security Officer

Your job as a security officer is to help protect an area from dishonest and untrustworthy people. In order to do this, you will have to be quite dependable and honest yourself. The company will trust you with access to certain areas, and you can’t abuse their trust. You’ll also be counted on to be dependable. You have to show up on time and complete your assignments entirely. If you’re not trustworthy, you might be the source of a security breach. You really do not want that on your conscience.

Problem-Solving Skills as a Security Officer

As a security officer, you’ll be faced with stressful issues that you must either solve alone or with a smaller team. These issues might not have the textbook solution that you learned during your training, and you’ll have to count on your own ideas and skills. At the heart of your problem-solving skills should be close attention to detail. Remember to check every lock in the building, and forgetting one might result in a security breach. Look for cues in other people’s body language as well.
